One of the busiest restaurants in Hong Kong is surprisingly a breakfast diner, and not to mention, one of the cheapest places you can go in Hong Kong. Australia Dairy Company is a Hong Kong style breakfast cafe, other known as a cha chaan teng. Although the food here may seem like nothing special, like any other cha chaan teng, Australia Dairy Company gives you a uniquely Hong Kong experience. The first thing you'll see when arriving at Australia Dairy Company is a line to the end of the block. Australia Dairy Company has essentially become a tourist attraction. While visiting, you should expect immediate service. Before sitting down, locals will already have ordered their food and will see it delivered within 90 seconds. English menus are provided as needed, but waiters will be pushy to get you in and out of the restaurant quickly. Feeling rushed isn't always good, but this is how the restaurant operates. Because of this, people are constantly flowing through the restaurant, and the line moves quickly. The menu has options of set menus for six to eight USD, or alternatively, items are also available a la carte. We went for the breakfast set. We got the toast with butter alongside scrambled eggs and the macaroni with ham in chicken soup. Additionally, we ordered the French toast a la carte. All of the food came out in about two minutes. The toast and eggs are nothing special, but are still tasty. The eggs are creamy and soft, while the toast is crispy. I appreciated that the toast was thick, thicker than most western style white bread slices. The French toast was also yummy! It is normally served with syrup, which we were not immediately given and had to ask for. We first spread the butter, then poured syrup all over the French toast. This is also a very tasty dish. The edges of the toast are crispy, while the inside is extremely fluffy and delicate. The syrup adds a much-needed sweetness and richness to the toast, which comes together to make a really delicious treat. The dish that surprised me the most was the macaroni soup. I have never had this dish before and really didn't know what to expect. Of course, macaroni is macaroni, and the ham was just ham. What really shocked me was the chicken broth. The broth was intensely chicken-flavored without being heavy or rich. This was a dish that didn't strike me as a breakfast dish or something that would be particularly tasty, but it really worked. Next time, I would go without the ham, as I didn't really feel like it added anything, but the macaroni was a good complement to the soup. The line outside of the restaurant can be daunting, but Australia Dairy Company is a really great experience for anyone. Expect the line to move quickly and do a little bit of research beforehand to understand how the restaurant operates. While you can probably find better food elsewhere without the line, it is cool to see people from all over the world eating alongside locals, appreciating a really important part of Hong Kong's history and culture. The food is still tasty and the entire dining experience is brief. It is impressive to see the restaurant operate like a well-oiled machine. If you ever need a quick bite or a sweet treat, Australia Dairy Company is a fun way to experience Hong Kong's cha chaan tengs in the middle of Kowloon.
